Prof. C. Chandra Sekhar received his B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, India, in 1984. He received his M.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras in 1986 and 1997, respectively. He was a Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) post-doctoral fellow at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, between May 2000 and May 2002. He was a Lecturer from 1989 to 1997, an Assistant Professor from 1997 to 2002, an Associate Professor from 2004 to 2010, and is a Professor from 2010 in Department of Computer Science and Engineering. His teaching interests are Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Computer Architecture. He received the “Srimathi Marti Annapurna Gurunath Award for Excellence in Teaching at IIT Madras” for the year 2016. His current research interests are in Visual Captioning, Deep Learning and Distance Metric Learning. He published about 135 papers in refereed journals and edited volumes, and in the proceedings of international and national conferences. He supervised 9 Ph.D. theses and 18 M.S. theses. He is currently supervising 2 Ph.D. students and 1 M.S. student. He has been an investigator for 14 sponsored research projects. He was a General Co-Chair of a premier International Conference, INTERSPEECH 2018, conducted under the aegis of International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) at Hyderabad in September, 2018. He handled many administrative responsibilities in the Institute. He was a member of Board of Governors of IIT Madras from 1st January, 2022 to 31st December, 2023. He was the Head of the Department from February 2019 to May 2022. He was a Sectional Observer from November 2017 to February 2019. He was the Local Institute Coordinator of GIAN Program from June 2015 to October 2016. He was a Member of GATE Academic Standing Committee, 2015. He was a Member of IIT Madras Young Faculty Recognition Award Committee during 2014 – 2016. He was Chairperson of Departmental Class Committee during 2014-2017. He was a Member of JEE (Advance) Online Examination Committee in 2013. He was a Member of GATE Score Normalization Committee in 2013. He was Chairperson of GATE 2013 and JAM 2013. He was Chairperson of M.Tech. and M.Sc. Admissions Committee in 2012. He was Vice-Chairperson of GATE 2012 and JAM 2012. He was Organizing Vice-Chairperson of GATE 2011. He was Vice-Chairperson of JMET 2011 and JAM 2011. He was Chairperson of Class Committee for Common Courses of First Year B.Tech. and Dual Degree Students during the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. He was the Warden of Mandakini Hostel from July 2002 to June 2006.
