You can reach Chennai either by air or by train. The IIT Madras campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, half-way between the Raj Bhavan and the Adyar bus terminus, i.e. about 12 kms from Chennai Central. The other landmarks are the Guindy Snake Park adjacent to the IIT main gate and the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus lying opposite to ours. The travel time from the airport, railway stations or Koyambedu bus terminus is approximately 45mins.

From Airport

If you arrive at the Chennai International Airport (MAA), you can make your way to the Institute in a Pre-paid Taxis, Ola, or Uber from the airport to inside the campus Or take a bus, PP21. You can travel from Chennai Airport to any destination within the city via the following options. Chennai airport has three main terminals, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 are international and Terminal 1 is domestic.
  • Pre-paid taxis: There are prepaid taxi booths inside the airport located in the Arrivals hall, where you can book and pay for the ride. Once you have your ticket, you can board a taxi. Taxis are available outside the arrivals area. The rates are fixed, so the taxi driver can neither refuse your ride, nor can overcharge you. Estimated fares from Chennai Airport taxi to the city centre are from INR 350 to 500. Some of the following companies serve Chennai Airport Taxi and surroundings: - Fast Track: +91 44 2888 9999 - Aviation Express Taxis: +91 44 2256 2193 - City taxi: +91 82972 82979 - Meru Cabs: +91 44 4422 4422
  • Uber/Ola: Uber works as expected in Chennai and Ola is another taxi aggregator service in India just like Uber. Both Uber and Ola offer airport transfers in a variety of sizes of cars. They can be booked the usual way, from your phone. However, Chennai Airport, also offers passengers the option to book a taxi without the application.
  • Chennai Airport Metro: Chennai Airport is linked to the metro system through a free shuttle bus. You can get the Inter Terminal Shuttle Service outside arrivals area and get to the Chennai Airport Metro Station. At metro station take the blue line to reach Guindy (nearest metro station from IIT Madras). From Guidndy you can either take a public service transport (Bus no. 119) from Guindy Bus Terminal or book a cab or taxi to reach IITM.

Railway

Even if you are coming by train you can always book Ola/Uber cabs to reach IIT Madras from the respective terminal stations. Alternatively, you can also use metro or local train or city buses.
  • Local Train: Use the subway and cross the street in front of the Chennai Central Railway Station, to reach Park Town station. Get tickets for train going to Kasturibai Nagar (Adyar). You can get a train every 20 minutes on weekdays during 4:20 am to 10:30 pm and every 30 minutes on weekends during 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. On reaching Kasturibai Nagar, get down and ask for Sardar Patel Road or IIT Madras. The In-gate of IIT Madras is at a walking distance of 5 minutes from the station. You can also go to Park Railway Station opposite the Central station and take a local train to Guindy or Saidapet station and reach the campus from there by the buses mentioned below. We advise you not to use this mode if you are travelling with a heavy luggage.
  • City Bus: If you are travelling with light luggage, you can take a city bus to IIT. The bus stop is right opposite the Central Station. You could use the subway to cross the road which is perpetually busy. Your options are:
    1. The direct buses to the campus are 19B and 5C. If you take any of them, get down at Gandhi Mandapam or CLRI, which is at walking distance from the IIT main gate.
    2. You can also take any bus to Saidapet and from there, any bus heading for Adyar or Besant Nagar Adyar (5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 23C etc.) which will drop you right in front of the IIT gate, on the opposite side.
    3. You could also take any bus to Adyar; there are frequent buses from Adyar Signal to the campus.
  • If you are at Chennai Egmore Railway Station then you can take 23C to IIT or a 23E, 23A, 23G to Adyar signal from where there are a number of buses to IIT.

Bus Terminus, CMBT, Koyambedu

Chennai interstate/intercity bus terminus is called Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, commonly known as CMBT. From CMBT, you can come to institute by taking city bus 23M or by Call Taxi, Ola, or Uber.

Reaching Research Park

There are two ways to reach event venue.
  • Via MGR Film City Road: The main entrance is at about 800m from the Rajiv Gandhi IT Expressway, Tharamani, Chennai. MGR film city road connects Rajiv Gandhi IT Expressway and Research Park. The first building, after entering Research Park campus, is the Building A. Turn right and cross the Building A to reach Building E or Building D. The venue in Building E is Auditorium (Room Number EG-03) at ground floor. The venue in Building D is at 7th floor (take the elevator to reach there).
  • Via IIT Madras: Industry-Academia Bridge located near Mandakini hostel connects IIT Madras campus to Research Park multi-level parking. From multi-level parking, you can enter Buliding D in two ways (i) via ground floor or (ii) the bridge on the 3rd floor connecting multi-level parking and Building D. After reaching Buiding D, you can go to Building E either via ground floor (or alternately via the bridge connecting different buildings) to enter Building E.
The two venues are marked in yellow color in the picure below.

Here is a map detailing most of the points of interest in and around the conference venue.

IIT Madras is a beautiful campus situated near the Guindy National Park. It is home to one of the most elegant antelopes in the world - the Black Buck. It also houses a large number of chital (spotted deer), bonnet macaque, monkeys and other rare wildlife.

Madras Music Season is a series of events (called a season !) hosted during mid-November to January every year in Chennai. These events are aimed at allowing aficionados of Carnatic music to appreciate performances by renowned artists, and to allow promising young artists to display their talent and skill. Audiences and artists come from across India and her diaspora to enjoy the season. Here is concert schedules for the music season of 2022. As a part of the cultural evening of the conference, there will be a violin concert by the famous musician Dr. Sriram Parasuram on Dec 18, Sunday, 6:15 pm at Central Lecture theatre. Don't miss !.

Getting around within Chennai

  1. Uber (or the local equivalent, Ola) is your best option to travel locally. At the conference venue and in your hotels, you will have WiFi, but to use local cab services, you will of course need mobile data while not in these locations. Make sure you get a good mobile data package before arriving here. If you want to tour around Chennai, we recommend this as your best option. A long-term rental option is also offered by Ola, this also works out very well.
  2. Local Trains, Metro: These are the lifeline of Chennai residents but can also be daunting to use due to the extreme crowds. Google Maps are the best option to find routes and timings.
  3. Walking: This is always an option for short distances, however note that you cannot always count on the availability of sidewalks and safe pedestrian crossings in Chennai.
