Activities

This page will list down the course activities in addition to the lectures. All deadlines in this course are set to 10pm on the dates specified.

Problem Sets (7% x 5 = 35%) : These are set of 6 questions each of 7 marks and totaling to 42 marks, with problem 6 being a harder one in the set. They will be posted incrementally as we uncover the relevant material in the class. There will be a dropbox link that will be shared with the group. The problem 6, will be the last one to be added to each of the set, and will be done 7 days before the deadline. Following are the submission deadlines.
  • Problem Set 1 : Aug 28 (to be evaluated by Aug 30)
  • Problem Set 2 : Sep 18 (to be evaluated by Sep 20)
  • Exam 1 on Sep 23 (to be evaluated by Sep 25 Oct 13)
  • Problem Set 3 : Oct 16, 2017 (to be evaluated by Oct 20)
  • Problem Set 4 : Nov 6, 2017 (to be evaluated by Nov 8)
  • Exam 2 on Nov 19 (to be evaluated by Nov 22)
  • Problem Set 5 (Optional) : Nov 25, 2017 (to be evaluated by Nov 25)
Each deadline is on a Monday (except Nov 19,25). The evaluation is set to be completed on or before the respective Wednesday. The discussion of the problem set solutions and exam solutions will be scheduled on or before the respective Friday.

Update (Oct 26, 2018) : We will take best 4 out of 5 problem set scores towards the grade. Deadline for Problem Set 5 is set to a date after the endsem exam.

Student Presentations (15%) : These will be presentations of advanced topics or research-level papers related to the syllabus of the course (but outside the syllabus and hence will not be covered in the regular lectures). Students should form groups (of possibly at most 2) and take up one topic each. Groups of larger size can be formed in consultation with the instructor. Each student will be given 45 minutes to talk about his or her part of the topic. We will schedule these meetings in the last week of October and Second week of November respectively.

Exams : As announced, there will be two exams for this course:
Exam 1 (20%) : Sep 23, 2017 - Sat, 10am - 12pm
Exam 2 (30%) : Nov 18, 2017 - Sat, 9am - 12pm
